 Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal late Sunday night announced her separation from her husband and fellow badminton player Parupalli Kashyap (P. Kashyap).

She wrote in an Instagram story, "After much thought and consideration, Kashyap and I have decided to part ways."

Saina wrote, "Sometimes life takes us in different directions. We are choosing peace, growth, and healing for each other. I’m grateful for all the memories with him and wish him the very best for the future. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy."

Saina Nehwal had a love marriage with Parupalli Kashyap on December 14, 2018. The two had been in a relationship since 2007, although they had known each other since 2005. In the early days of their careers, both trained together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad.


Saina-Kashyap hosted a reception party in Hyderabad


Saina got married to P. Kashyap at his home in Hyderabad. The ceremony was attended only by close family and friends. The couple hosted their wedding reception on December 16, 2018, at the Novotel Hotel in Hyderabad.


This high-profile reception party was attended by several well-known personalities from the sports world, including V. Chamundeshwarnath, Kidambi Srikanth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, and Sudheer Babu, as well as celebrities from the film industry such as Nagarjuna and Rakul Preet.


Saina wore a blue velvet lehenga designed by fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Kashyap wore a blue silk sherwani with intricate hand embroidery. Sabyasachi shared the details of the couple’s outfits in a tweet.


Saina is the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal.

Saina Nehwal, who hails from Haryana, is the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal. She brought home a bronze medal for India at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2015, she became the World No. 1 player in women’s singles rankings.

Saina is the only Indian woman to have achieved the World No. 1 ranking in badminton. She has represented India in three Olympic Games. Saina won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2018.

She gained national attention in 2008 by winning the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Championship. That same year, she competed in her first Olympics and became the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.

She defeated then World No. 5 Wang Chen of Hong Kong but lost to Maria Kristin Yulianti of Indonesia. In 2009, Saina became the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series title. She was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2009 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2010.

Kashyap Won Gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games


Parupalli Kashyap hails from Hyderabad, Telangana. He won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It was the first medal by an Indian badminton player at the Commonwealth Games in 32 years.

Kashyap has been a student of both former All England Champion Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand. He also became the first Indian male badminton player to reach the quarterfinals of the Olympics in 2012.

In 2013, Kashyap was ranked World No. 6 — the highest ranking of his career. However, due to recurring injuries, he was unable to maintain this position for long.
